Can you see what is missing from thsi photo I took on my way home last night?
That’s right it’s the 6pm train from Bristol Temple Meads to London Paddington - the train that should have been taking me home at the time I took this picture. I was particularly annoyed as I only had 5 pages of a 600 page to fill up the resulting 30 minute wait for the next train.
I can’t wait to move back to Bristol!

I am a big fan of pockets as they are useful places to keep stuff and when I have not bought items of clothing before on the basis that they did not have enough pockets - not for me the finest cut or designer label I want practical pockets and why?
Because I carry lots of stuff in them - even it would seem when I don’t think am carrying that much with me as was the case today.
When I embark on any long journey I don one of my fisheman jackets - purely because of the amount of stuff that I can keep on me such as travel documents, books to read on te journey, mp3 player with extra batteries, food and anything else I might need and can be fitted into a pocket.
Today however I was only travelling to work and so I wasn’t carrying that kind of stuff with me I was just carrying my usual day to day stuff and thanks to getting soaked on my way to work I decided to empty all of my pockets out so that i coule let my jacket be humg up to dry and check nothing n my pockets had been damaged. The resultant pile did draw comment from nearby people about just what I kept in my pockets, which was:
- One pair of gloves
- A 600 page novel (I need something to read whilst waiting for trans!)
- Mobile phone
- Railcards and train tickets
- Mp3 player, headphones and enough batteries for over a weeks use
- 2 sets of spare batteries for my camera
- House keys
- Keyring with set of earplugs inside
- 3 pens
- Wallet
- Notepad
- Security pass for work
- A few quid of loose change
- Letter from bank
- Recent pay slip
- Couple of random reciepts
- A few poems written on a scrap piece of paper
- and a few odd pieces of plastic
It’s not that much is it really?
Now I know I don’t like Calne and that I consider Bristol to be a lot better than Calne for countless reasons including (but not limited to) more things to do and my family do not live there, but I do not look at it through rose tinted spectacles I know it has flaws, but after the commute today wish I lived here so I could avoid wasting 3-4 hours a day in travelling. Still my prospective housemates are viewing a couple of places today so here’s hoping they find somewhere decent.
In fact I am a rather bedraggled looking ape!
Once again Slowcoach and Worst Great Western have conspired to make me late for work, but to add insult to injury the commute today cost 3 times as much as normal and I still managed to wind up 10 minutes late.
There are some things I like about my commute like some of the people I regularly see such as the attractive woman on the the 0730 service from Cardiff to Portsmouth who I see on a Friday when coming back from a night’s work at Glamorgan SU.
But as I have commented before I do not appreciate buses that are either 2 minutes early or 30 minutes late especially when it seems to happen most days - to guarantee getting to work for 9am I have to catch a bus at 6:46am, which is itself ingeniously timed to arrive at the train station 2 minutes after a train has departed for Bristol meaning a 20 minute** wait for the next train in the right direction and then I arrive at work over an hour early and I do begrudge this after all it’s an hour a day wasted.
In theory I can get a later train and bus and still get to work on time, but as anyone that deals with theories will tell you theory and practice are frequently two very different things.
Here’s what happened when I tested the theory today:
- 0745 - Leave house to head to bus stop in rain.
- 0746 - Torrential downpour, rains so much I can barely keep my eyes open.
- 0753 - Bus leaves bus stop.
- 0754 - I arrive at bus stop.
- 0755 - Bus due.
- 0757 - Another person at stop informs me bus already gone.
- 0801 - Call taxi.
- 0803 - Taxi arrives.
- 0818 - Get to train station.
- 0820 - Train due.
- 0825 - Train actually leaves.
- 0846 - Train due at Brtistol Temple Meads
- 0901 - Actually get to Temple Meads
- 0911 - Arrive at work 11 minutes late, pissed off and soaking wet.
And I am now currently sat at my desk with as much clothing as is decent removed, trying to dry out just so that when I leave to get lunch I can get pissed on again my a capricious God who I don’t even believe in.
*And yes I know I am rarely such.
**Assuming that the train itself is running on time - and that is a BIG assumption!

I can can’t help but wonder why they are not supposed to be taken onto the dance floor? Is their dancing that bad? Anyways it was a school disco last night at Glamorgan SU and I couldn’t help but think that if the girls at my school had looked like that I’d still have been single.
As ever the photos are up in the galleries.
