Jack Peñate @ The Thekla

Jack Peñate at the Thekla in Bristol

Last weekend he was dominating the airwaves on the BBC from Glastonbury, this weekend he was in Bristol on a boat thinking it was still Friday.

I have to admit that I saw his set at Glastonbury and I wasn’t wholly convinced, however I went along with an open mind (and a slight headache) as both of my housemates rated him highly and if it was enough to get my second housemate out it must be good as unlike Dolm, he doesn’t come out to gigs as often.

I almost didn’t get in to the gig as security were paying attention for once and asked both of my friends (who are both 24 like me) for ID, which they had - This of course prompted me to comment in front of the doorman doing the ID’ing, “Good job he isn’t asking me for ID as I don’t carry any proof of age on me.” Luckily either a)my stubble b)my stupidity at saying that in front of him or c) that both of my friends were 24 was enough to convince him of the fact I was old enough to enter - That or he just wasn’t listening.

The warm up act managed to turn my ’slight’ headache into something much worse, thanks to a seeming disregard for volume control and musical taste. The offending act were Lethal Bizzle, who I feel could at least have changed their name for one night to Lethal Brizzle seeing as how they were actually in Bristol.

Then it was on to the main event itself and it was probably one of the morepacked nights I have seen at the Thekla, as you can see from the photo I wasn’t at the front of the crowd like I usually am and although waving a camera around got me to the side of the stage I figured that it just wasn’t worth trying to get a good spot at the front.

Anyways for those of you not already aware of Jack Peñate why not have a look at Jack Peñate’s MySpace page, and have a listen.

The Things People Sell…

Ebay logoWhen I was in 6th form at school and in my first year or so at university I used to use eBay from time to time to buy things, however as a poor student I didn’t really use it much beyond my first year or so at university as I didn’t have the money spare to buy cameras (or more often tat) unnecessarily.

To illustrate my point here is the eBay song:

However for some reason recently I wound up looking through the pages of tat and deciding that to buy some item and freshly armed with a paypal account I have already won 15 auctions on my first day. Not for anything too important or expensive, but it’s payday so for a moment or two I can afford to feel rich and spend small amounts of money on things I want rather than actually need.

I had forgotten how much of a tat emporium eBay actually is as when actually trying to look for specific things a lot of rubbish was found as well and when I actually decided to just window shop for random things I almost spent £80 on a Tachikoma figurine (and when I showed it to a housemate I wasn’t the only one so tempted).

That said I have also put a much larger bid on a camera and even if I am forced up to my maximum bid I’ll still be saving fifty quid or so, unlike the other auctions though I will have to wait a day or so for the results of that one.

Out With The Old

Tony Blair abandoned by a skip.

On Wednesday at work I recall people at work avidly watching the live coverage of Tony Blair and George Brown heading to Buckingham Palace to hand over and receive power respectively.

My favourite moment of the coverage was after George Brown had arrived at the palace for his private audience with the Queen. This of itself was pretty boring after all it was just Brown getting out of his car and going inside the palace, what made it amusing was the commentators saying that the audience would probably last about twenty minute or so and then commenting that the ‘live coverage’ would continue whilst this was going on.

I didn’t fancy watching a car parked up for twenty minutes outside Buckingham Palace, so I went back to work instead.

Anyways, on my way home after a few drinks with a friend I happened to notice the scene pictured above and I couldn’t help but chuckle.

Wimbledon: Eating My Words

Filed under: Random — Camera Dave @ 9:04 am

Earlier this week I predicted that Henman wasn’t going to make it past the first day of Wimbledon, let alone the first round and reading the Times website this morning I see I was wrong - Not only did he manage to make his game last until day 2, he actually managed to win it.

So now this means for a brief while at least Henmania can set in - Well it might set in, after all he’s got another game and therefore another chance to be knocked out today.

Anyone that wants to place a bet against me, because they actually believe Henman will make the final, let me know I’ll offer you good odds on that.

Murphy’s Law Strikes Again!

On Monday evening I was supposed to set up the photos for this week from my recent visit to the S.S. Great Britain and I edited the photos ready to put them up here. However like the genius I am, I then decided to set up a wireless network in our house so that I literally can do it from my bed thanks to my wireless keyboard and mouse, however it isn’t just my computer peripherals that aren’t connected - My mind wasn’t connected at the time either, as I forgot to upload the photos.

So off I go to bed thinking job done, until today when I go to put a photo up I find that I can’t do so just yet and I also forgot to put one up yesterday.  Also as I don’t  visit my house now until tomorrow, it means I can’t put any up until tomorrow either - Oops.

Wimbledon

It’s that time of the year when the world seems to revolve around SW19 for two brief weeks and Iraq and other such important things are displaced from the news by disappointment after disappointment about how well the British players aren’t doing.

This morning before leaving the house on the BBC Breakfats news I found out how Andrew Murray has dropped out at the last minute due to a wrist injury  meaning that the “hopes of Britain” rest once more on Tim Henman, a man with a proven track record of disappointing his fans.

Then on the way to work thanks to the Metro I learned that the strawberry ‘crisis’ that Wimbledon was facing has been averted.

Still with Henman almost certain to be knocked out of Wimbledon today in the first round today I can’t wait to see the headlines mourning Wimbledon tomorrow.
